Looking after your website
What we watch, what we put right, and what we deliberately leave alone. Written so you can check whether we did what we said.
What we watch
These run whatever plan you are on, including the free one. Each is a check with a plain result, not a score we made up.
Whether your site is answering at all
Is it there, does it load, and is it returning an error page instead of your page.
How quickly it answers
A site that takes too long to load loses the visitor before they see it. We tell you when it slows down.
That your web address points where it should
The address people type has to lead to your site. When it stops resolving, or starts pointing somewhere unexpected, that is usually invisible from the outside until it costs you something.
Your certificate, before it expires
The padlock in the browser comes from a certificate that runs out on a fixed date. We tell you ahead of that date rather than on it.
Where your redirects send people
An old address that forwards to somewhere unexpected is a problem you cannot see from your own homepage.
Whether search engines can find you
Whether your site is asking search engines not to list it, whether it has a sitemap, and whether your pages carry a title and a description. Sites accidentally hide themselves more often than you would think.
That the checks themselves are running
A check that quietly stopped running looks exactly like a site with nothing wrong. We treat a missing result as a finding, not as a pass.
There are checks in our method that nothing actually looks for yet — whether your address is listed as unsafe elsewhere, and when your domain registration expires. They can never appear in your results, so their absence is not a clean bill of health. We would rather you knew that.
What we do about what we find
This is where the plans differ, and it is the only place they differ much.
We tell you — every plan
What was found, what it means for you, and what it would take to put right. In words, not a code.
We put it right — managed plans
On a managed plan we make the repair ourselves, within categories you have agreed to in advance, and you get a written account of what changed and whether it worked.
You approve anything that matters
Some changes we will not make without you saying yes, whatever your plan. You are asked in plain words, and nothing happens until you answer.
You can ask for changes
A new page, updated wording, a price change. Ask in the same place you report a problem; it goes to the right people.
What we do not do
Said here rather than discovered later.
Nothing is repaired on the free plan
The free plan watches and reports. That is the whole of it. If you want us to act on what we find, that is a managed plan, and we would rather tell you now than after something has broken.
We do not ask for the keys to your server
Where we need access to a machine of yours, a small piece of software runs on it and calls out to us with only the permissions you granted, which you can withdraw in one action.
We do not act outside what you agreed
The categories of repair we may make without asking are set per site, and are never implied by which plan you are on.
Where to start
Free monitoring costs nothing and tells you the state of your site today. It is the sensible first step even if you go no further.
We watch your site and tell you what we find. No charge, and no repairs.
We look after it: watching, fixing, and the changes you ask for.
Not sure which of these it is? Say it in your own words and we will sort it out.
